Used Qwic e-bike: what MN7, FN7 and RD9 mean (2026)

Used Qwic e-bike: what MN7, FN7 and RD9 mean (2026)

Older Qwics carry codes like MN7, FN7.1 or RD9.2 instead of a name. Here is what they mean, and what the 2023 bankruptcy changes for you.

Summary. Qwic is an Amsterdam e-bike brand that went bankrupt in November 2023 and restarted in March 2024. Both halves of that sentence matter if you are buying one. Older Qwics carry a code like MN7, FN7.1 or RD9.2 instead of a model name, and those few letters tell you where the motor sits, which is the first thing to know about any used e-bike. This guide shows you how to read the code and what to check after the restart.

Is Qwic still around?

Yes. The court in Amsterdam declared the company bankrupt in November 2023. In March 2024 a group of Dutch investors restarted it, and the staff went back to work at the Amsterdam office. The new owners said that batteries, parts, warranty and maintenance would get priority. In September 2026 Qwic listed more than 400 sales and service points in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

For a used buyer, the bankruptcy changes less than you might fear. In its 2018 Premium manual, Qwic gave two years of warranty on the battery and the electrics, and five on the frame. On those terms, a Qwic bought new before November 2023 is past its two years on the electrics by now anyway. What you want to know is whether a replacement battery exists for that model, and a Qwic dealer can tell you that before you buy.

How do you read a Qwic code?

Qwic's older Premium bikes are named with a short code rather than a word. Qwic's own 2018 Premium manual lists them side by side:

CodeMotorGears
FN7.1In the front wheel, 35 NmShimano Nexus 7 hub
RD9.2In the rear wheel, 40 NmShimano Deore 9-speed derailleur
MN7, MN8At the cranks, Bafang, 80 NmShimano Nexus hub
MN8cAt the cranks, Bafang, 80 NmShimano Nexus 8 hub with a coaster brake
MA8At the cranks, Brose, 90 NmShimano Alfine 8 hub
MN330, MN380At the cranks, Brose, 90 NmNuVinci stepless hub

So the first letter is the motor: F for the front wheel, R for the rear wheel, M for the middle, at the cranks. The second letter is the gearing: N for a Nexus or NuVinci hub, A for an Alfine hub, D for a derailleur. The number is usually the number of gears, but not always. The 2018 manual lists the MN7 with an 8-speed Nexus, and in MN330 and MN380 the number is the NuVinci hub type. So count the gears on the shifter.

An i in the name, as in Premium i, means the battery sits inside the frame. Qwic introduced the Premium i in 2019, next to the classic Premium. On a Premium without the i, the battery sits in the rear rack.

Later models added extra letters, like the D in MN7D or a +. We could not confirm from Qwic what each of those means, so do not decode them. Ask the seller for the motor and the battery capacity instead.

Front, rear or middle: which motor suits you?

The three positions ride differently, and on a used Qwic the code tells you which one you are looking at before you even see the bike.

  • Front wheel (F). The motor pulls you along, which is fine on flat city streets. At 35 Nm it is the gentlest of the three.
  • Rear wheel (R). The motor pushes you, which many riders find more natural when they set off. At 40 Nm it is a little stronger, and on the RD9.2 it comes with a derailleur rather than a hub.
  • Middle (M). The motor drives through the bike's own gears. On the 2018 Premium bikes it gives 80 to 90 Nm, more than twice the hub motors, which makes it the strongest by a distance. This is the one you want for headwind, bridges or a child seat.

Whatever the code says, ride it from standstill before you agree a price. Two minutes on the bike tells you more than any spec sheet.

Where is the battery, and what should you ask about it?

On a classic Premium the battery sits in the rear rack, with the rear light built into it. On a Premium i it sits in the frame. Either way it comes out, so you can charge it indoors.

Qwic sold the 2018 Premium with a choice of 375, 470, 625 or 735 Wh. The Premium i came with 400 Wh as standard and 540 Wh as an option. Those numbers are what the battery held when it was new, and a battery that is several years old holds less. Charging a flat battery takes time too. The manual gives up to five and a half hours for 375 Wh and up to ten and a half for 735 Wh.

Three questions to ask before you talk about price:

  1. How old is the battery, and has it ever been replaced?
  2. Does the original charger come with the bike?
  3. Has the bike been serviced by a Qwic dealer, and is there any proof?

What does Qwic sell now?

Newer Qwics have names instead of codes, and the Signal and the Elan arrived for the 2026 season. In September 2026 the Signal started at € 2,399 and the Inter Plus at € 2,499, and the Elan Tour, with a Bosch motor, at € 3,599. You will also see Echo Daily, Elan Daily, Elan Flow and Atlas Tour in shop listings.

That matters for you in one practical way. Shops list new Qwics too, so if you want a used one, filter on condition.

What should you check before you pay?

Six checks, in the order that saves you the most money.

  • Battery. Age, charger and service history, in that order. On a bike older than about five years, price it as though a new battery may be coming.
  • Motor position. Read it from the code, then confirm it on the bike.
  • Display and assist levels. Switch everything on and try every level while riding, not on the stand.
  • Gears. Hubs should shift cleanly while you pedal gently. On a derailleur, look at the chain and the sprockets for wear.
  • Battery lock. Check the battery locks in place and does not rattle, and that the seller has the key.
  • Frame number. Check it is present, legible and matches the papers. The Dutch police list the signs of a stolen bike, such as a scratched frame number or a lock without a key, on their page about buying a used bike, in Dutch. Every bike listed on BikeFair is checked against stolen-bike registers before it goes live, which is the part you cannot do yourself from a photo.

Selling a Qwic instead?

Buyers search Qwic by code and model name, so put the full name from the frame into your title, exactly as it is written: Premium i MN7, FN7.1, RD9.2. Then add the three things buyers ask first:

  1. The battery capacity from the label, and a photo of that label.
  2. Whether the battery sits in the frame or the rack.
  3. Your own height, or the frame size if you know it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Qwic still in business? Yes. Qwic was declared bankrupt in November 2023 and restarted in March 2024 under new owners. In September 2026 it listed more than 400 sales and service points in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

Is Qwic a Dutch brand? Yes. Qwic is based in Amsterdam.

What does MN7 mean on a Qwic? M means a mid-motor at the cranks and N a Shimano Nexus hub. The 7 usually means seven gears, but the 2018 MN7 has eight, so count them.

What does the i in Qwic Premium i mean? The battery sits inside the frame instead of in the rear rack.

Does my old Qwic still have warranty? In its 2018 Premium manual, Qwic gave two years on the battery and the electrics and five on the frame. A bike bought before the 2023 bankruptcy is past the two years on the electrics. Ask a Qwic dealer about the frame, with the frame number.

Can I still get a battery for an old Qwic? The restarted company said batteries and parts would get priority. Ask a Qwic dealer with the exact code before you buy, not after.

What motor does a Qwic Elan have? Every Elan has a Bosch mid motor: an Active Line Plus on the Elan Daily and Elan Flow, and a Performance Line on the Elan Tour.
