Used VanMoof: S3, S2, No.3 or S6? 2026 model guide

Used VanMoof: S3, S2, No.3 or S6? 2026 model guide

Which used VanMoof should you buy? The S3, X3 and newer still get parts, the S2 does not. Prices, the S6 and what changed for theft tracking in 2026.

Summary. A used VanMoof is still a sensible buy in 2026, as long as you pick the right generation. VanMoof went bankrupt in July 2023 and was bought by Lavoie, and its spare parts programme covers the S3, X3 and every newer model, but not the S2 or anything older. In September 2026 a new S6 cost €3,298, and a used S3 was listed on BikeFair for €1,309. This guide shows you what each model is, how to test the shifting, why theft tracking on an S3 or X3 stopped for new owners in 2026, and the one step that makes the bike really yours.

Is VanMoof still in business in 2026?

Yes. VanMoof was founded in Amsterdam in 2009 by the brothers Taco and Ties Carlier. On 17 July 2023 the Court of Amsterdam declared the Dutch VanMoof companies bankrupt. Dutch bankruptcies are published in the Centraal Insolventieregister, in Dutch. On 31 August 2023 Lavoie, then part of McLaren Applied, announced that it was buying VanMoof.

Since then VanMoof has restarted spare parts production, rebuilt its service network around independent workshops and launched a new model, the S6. In September 2026 VanMoof sold the S6 new in the Netherlands.

For you as a used buyer, that history decides two things: which models still get parts, and where you get the bike fixed. You will find both below.

Which VanMoof models will you find used?

The letter in a VanMoof name tells you the frame, and the number tells you the generation. S is the tall, straight frame. X is the compact frame with smaller wheels. A is the low step-through of the fifth generation.

ModelLaunchedWhat to know
Electrified S2016An older e-bike generation. Not covered by VanMoof's spare parts programme.
S2 and X22018The generation before the S3. Not covered by the spare parts programme either.
S3 and X32020A matrix display in the top tube and an automatic electronic shifter with four gears.
S5 and A52022Halo Ring displays next to the grips instead of the matrix display, and automatic shifting with three gears. The A5 has the low step-through frame.
S4 and X42023Cheaper successors to the S3 and X3 frame shapes, with an automatic hub with two gears. Launched in May 2023, two months before the bankruptcy.
S6 and S6 Open2025The first VanMoof designed under the new owner. A mechanical AutoShift hub and a 487 Wh battery. The S6 Open is the step-through with smaller wheels.

The S3 is the VanMoof name that brings the most searchers to BikeFair, and there is a good reason to start there. It is the oldest model that is still inside VanMoof's parts programme. If you want the safest bet for repairs, buy an S3, X3 or anything newer.

On the S3, X3 and S6 the battery is built into the frame. You charge it on the bike, and replacing it is a job for a workshop.

What does a used VanMoof cost in 2026?

Condition and battery health move the price more than anything else. As a reference, these are asking prices on BikeFair in September 2026, next to the new price at VanMoof.

ModelUsed asking price, September 2026New price, September 2026
S3€1,309No longer sold new
X3€1,349 to €1,439No longer sold new
S6€2,479€3,298

A used S6 costs almost twice as much as a used S3. For that you get the newer design, the mechanical hub and, if the bike was bought new, a three-year warranty. The S3 is the cheaper way in, but it shifts electronically and, since 2026, a new owner can no longer get theft tracking for it.

Is a used VanMoof S6 worth the extra money?

VanMoof announced the S6 on 10 June 2025 and sold it in the Netherlands from the start, with the first deliveries planned for August 2025. So a used S6 is always a young bike.

The biggest change is the shifting. The S3 and S5 generations change gear with an electronic shifter. The S6 has a mechanical hub with three gears that VanMoof calls the AutoShift Hub. It still changes gear for you by reading your speed, but with a simpler mechanism. VanMoof itself calls it foolproof and extremely reliable. That is the maker's own claim, and there is no long-term owner record yet.

The rest in short: a 487 Wh battery built into the frame, a range of 60 to 150 km according to VanMoof, and a three-year warranty when bought new. VanMoof gives a rider height of 165 to 210 cm for the S6 and 150 to 200 cm for the S6 Open.

If you buy a used S6, ask for the original receipt, so you and any workshop can see when the warranty started.

Is there a non-electric VanMoof?

Yes. VanMoof started in 2009 with bikes you pedal yourself and only later moved to e-bikes. Its first e-bike, the VanMoof 10 Electrified, came out in 2014. The Electrified S followed in 2016.

The pedal-only VanMoofs, such as the No.3, have the same straight top tube as the electric ones, and they often have LED lights and a lock built into the frame. What they do not have is a motor, a motor battery or an electronic shifter, and those are the parts that make an older e-bike expensive to keep going.

On a test ride, check that the lights work and that the built-in lock opens and closes smoothly. The rest is an ordinary city bike check: gears, brakes, tyres and the frame number.

How do you test the shifting on a used VanMoof?

Every electric VanMoof from the S3 onwards changes gear by itself. On an S3 or X3 there are four gears and the shifter is electronic. The S5 and A5 have three, the S4 and X4 have two, and the S6 has its mechanical hub with three gears.

  • Ride the bike, do not test it on the stand.
  • Start from standstill, speed up and slow down a few times.
  • Feel for shifts that hesitate, skip or clunk under load.
  • On an S3 or X3, check that the matrix display responds.
  • On an S5 or A5, check that both Halo Rings light up.

Shifting that misbehaves on an S3 or X3 is the thing to negotiate on, or the reason to walk away.

How do you transfer a VanMoof into your name?

App-connected VanMoofs, such as the S3, S5 and S6, are linked to their owner's account in the VanMoof app. VanMoof says every VanMoof needs a valid validation code to change hands, and calls that code the most crucial part of buying one second-hand.

It works like this. The seller removes the bike from their account and gets a new validation code by email. You use that code to link the bike to your own account in the app.

Do not pay until the bike is linked to your account and you have unlocked it from your own phone. If a seller cannot or will not do that, walk away. Check the frame number as well. Our guide on why the frame number matters explains what to look for, and the Dutch police list the warning signs on their bike theft page, in Dutch.

Does theft tracking still work on a VanMoof S3 or X3?

Not for a new owner. The S3 and X3 tracked a stolen bike with a GSM chip. Because the 2G network is being switched off, that chip is no longer active on bikes without a subscription. VanMoof now only tracks S3 and X3 bikes that had an active Ride Pro subscription by 31 March 2026, and new Ride Pro subscriptions for the S3 and X3 can no longer be bought.

What still works:

  • S3 and X3 bikes built from April 2021 onwards work with Apple Find My, as long as the bike is not marked as stolen in the VanMoof app.
  • The alarm still goes off when someone moves the bike while the Kick Lock is engaged. The push notification to your phone needs Ride Pro.

So lock a used S3 or X3 like any other e-bike, with a good second lock. Our guide to choosing the right bike lock helps you pick one.

Where do you get a used VanMoof serviced?

At a VanMoof service partner, which is an independent workshop, not a VanMoof store. In June 2024 VanMoof said it had restarted production of all 500 separate parts for the S3, X3 and newer models, and supplies them to its partners through an ordering portal. In June 2025 VanMoof reported more than 250 service partners in 13 countries.

The S2, X2, Electrified S and older models fall outside that parts programme. In February 2024 VanMoof did publish repair manuals and technical drawings for older models, so a good workshop can still work on them. But no new parts are promised.

Before you buy, find a service partner near you. Ask whether they work on your model, and what a new battery or a shifter repair would cost for it. Prices differ between workshops, because they are independent businesses.

What should you check before you pay?

  • Ownership. The bike is linked to your account with the new validation code.
  • Battery. Ask how old it is and roughly how far it has been ridden. Charge it on the bike while you are there.
  • Shifting. Every gear, while riding.
  • Display. The matrix display on an S3 or X3, the Halo Rings on an S5 or A5.
  • Kick Lock. The lock on the rear wheel engages and releases.
  • Frame number. Present, legible and matching the papers.

Our guide on how far a battery really takes you explains what to expect from an older battery, and our e-bike buying guide covers the rest of what to check on any used e-bike. Every bike listed on BikeFair is checked against stolen-bike registers before it goes live.

Selling a VanMoof instead?

Buyers search VanMoof by model, so put the model in your title, for example VanMoof S3 or VanMoof X3. Then add what buyers ask first:

  1. How old the battery is.
  2. Whether you still have the original receipt.
  3. Photos of the display and the frame number.

Once you agree on a sale, remove the bike from your account so you can give the buyer the new validation code. Our tips on taking good photos of your bike help your listing stand out.
